Abstract

This research was motivated by the low mathematical problem-solving ability ofthird-grade students at SDN Perwira III Bekasi, particularly in solving multiplication word problems. The students experienced difficulties in identifying the known and required information, constructing mathematical models, and drawing conclusions appropriate to the context of the problems. This study aimed to improve the mathematical problem-solving ability of third-grade students through the implementation of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model. The research employed Classroom Action Research (CAR) using Kurt Lewin’s model, which was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of four stages: planning, action, observation, and reflection. The research subjects were all 30 third-grade students of SDN Perwira III Bekasi, comprising 14 male students and 16 female students. The findings revealed that the implementation of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model improved students’ mathematical problem-solving ability across all indicators. This improvement was demonstrated by the increase in classical learning mastery from 57% in Cycle I to 90% in Cycle II, as well as the increase in the average score from 68 in Cycle I to 91 in Cycle II. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the implementation of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model was effective in improving the mathematical problem-solving ability of third-grade elementary school students. Therefore, this learning model can be considered an alternative approach for mathematics instruction in elementary schools.
