Abstract

This research presents the development of an ambulance priority system for intelligent traffic lights using Raspberry Pi as the main controller. The system is designed to detect the presence of an ambulance in real time and automatically adjust traffic light signals to provide priority access, thereby reducing delays in emergency response. A camera is used as the primary sensor to capture traffic conditions, while image processing based on transfer learning and the YOLO object detection algorithm is applied to identify ambulances accurately. Under normal conditions, traffic lights operate according to standard signal cycles. When an ambulance is detected and validated, the system switches to priority mode by activating a green light on the ambulance’s lane and setting red lights on other lanes. The priority mode is maintained as long as the ambulance remains detected at the intersection, and once it has passed, the system automatically returns to normal operation. Hardware components include Raspberry Pi, Arduino Mega, LoRa communication modules, relay modules, and traffic light indicators, while the software controls detection, validation, and signal timing. System testing shows that the proposed design is capable of responding quickly and reliably to ambulance detection, maintaining stable traffic light operation, and improving traffic flow efficiency at intersections. This system demonstrates potential to enhance emergency vehicle mobility and support intelligent transportation systems in urban areas.
