Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of composition variations of polypropylene (PP) waste and cotton fiber on the mechanical and physical properties of composite materials. The materials used in this research were polypropylene waste as the matrix and cotton fabric fibers as reinforcement. The composition variations used were PP/cotton 90/10, 80/20, and 70/30. Composite fabrication was carried out using the hot press method. The tests conducted included tensile testing based on ASTM D638, covering tensile strength, strain, and modulus of elasticity, and physical property testing based on JIS A 509:2003, including density, water absorption, and thickness swelling.The results showed that composition variation significantly affected the composite characteristics. The highest tensile strength was obtained at the PP/cotton 90/10 composition with a value of 5.41 N/mm² and a modulus of elasticity of 0.221 GPa, while the lowest value was found in pure PP at 3.34 N/mm² and 0.169 GPa. The composite density ranged from 0.9 to 1.25 g/cm³, while water absorption increased from 3.20% to 7.62% with increasing cotton fiber fraction, and the thickness swelling values remained below the standard limit.
