Abstract
Muhamad Rachman, 41182109210053: The Effect of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Approach on Improving Students’ Numeracy Literacy Skills in Mathematics Learning in Grade V at Meranti Integrated Islamic Elementary School. Numeracy literacy is an essential competence that elementary school students must possess to understand, apply, and interpret mathematical concepts in various real-life contexts. However, mathematics learning in elementary schools tends to be procedural and insufficiently connected to real-world situations, which contributes to students’ low numeracy literacy. This study aims to examine the role of the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) approach in improving numeracy literacy in elementary school mathematics learning. This research employed an experimental design using a STEM learning model based on the Engineering Design Process (EDP). The experiment was conducted with 20 fifth-grade students of SDIT Meranti in the 2025/2026 academic year. The research instrument was a numeracy literacy test administered as a pretest under conventional learning and a posttest after implementing STEM-based EDP learning. Data were analyzed using the Liliefors normality test, Fisher’s homogeneity test, paired-sample t-test, and N-Gain test. The results showed an increase in students’ average numeracy literacy scores from 66.00 in the pretest to 80.00 in the posttest. The paired-sample t-test indicated that the calculated t-value was greater than the t-table value with a significance level of p < 0.05. Therefore, it can be concluded that the implementation of STEM-based EDP learning significantly affects the improvement of students’ numeracy literacy. The N-Gain test result was 38.89, categorized as moderate. Thus, STEM-based EDP learning can be used as an alternative instructional model to enhance numeracy literacy in elementary school mathematics learning.
