Abstract

This research aims to describe and analyze the phenomena of code-switching and code-mixing in the communication practices of students at Daar El-Qolam Islamic Boarding School, particularly in the context of English language learning. Data were collected through interviews with participants from diverse linguistic backgrounds and analyzed using a descriptive qualitative approach with sociolinguistic and morphological theories. The findings show that students frequently use code-switching in both inter-sentential and intra-sentential forms, as well as code-mixing through insertion, alternation, and congruent lexicalization. There are instances of imperfect English sentence structures and the use of Indonesian affixes in English utterances. The motivations for code-switching and code-mixing include limited vocabulary, environmental influence, reflexive language use, and communicative convenience. These phenomena reflect the dynamics of multilingualism in the pesantren environment and their role in the second language (L2) acquisition process.
