Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of fiber direction on banana stem fiber composites reinforced with polyester resin on tensile value and physical properties. The fiber used in this study was banana stem fiber and the matrix used was Yukalac 157 BTNQ-EX polyester resub. The composite was made using the hand layup technique. The test to be carried out with a tensile test using the ASTM D638 standard. From the data that has been obtained and analyzed through the study, it can be concluded that the highest tensile strength was obtained by the banana stem fiber reinforced polyester resin composite with a 90° lamination direction with a value of 15.0539 N/mm2 while the lowest tensile strength was obtained by the 45° laminated fiber direction composite, with a value of 6.98817 N/mm2. While the physical property test showed that the average density value of each volume fraction variation was above the JIS A509 - 2003 standard. The water absorption and thickness swelling values of all fiber direction variations, both continuous fibers, woven fibers, and laminated fibers were still below the maximum limit. The micro-test results show that the composite has defects such as pulled out fibers, voids, and cracks in the matrix which provide an overview of the quality and performance of the composite.
