Abstract

Communication is an important aspect in household life that determines the harmony of a married couple. However, in the case of couples who live with extended families, communication becomes more complex due to external factors such as the role of in-laws, social norms, economic pressure, and intervention from the extended family. This study aims to understand the communication patterns of married couples who live with extended families, the factors that influence them, and their impact on marital relationships. The research method used is a qualitative method with a case study approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews to obtain a more comprehensive picture of their communication interactions in everyday life. The results of the study indicate that married couples who live with extended families apply three main communication patterns, namely closed communication patterns, selective open communication patterns, and adaptive communication patterns. This study also found that factors that shape couples' communication patterns include cultural norms, family intervention, financial pressure, differences in gender roles in the household, and couple openness. Open, selective and adaptive communication can make couples' relationships more harmonious.
