Abstract
This research aims to analyze the representation of social criticism in Rand Slam’s song lyrics, particularly in his album 9051, focusing on the songs “9051,” “Praduka,” “Prosa Eksil,” and “Selisik Sekat.” The analysis employs Stuart Hall’s representation theory and Roland Barthes’ semiotic approach to reveal the denotative, connotative, and mythical meanings embedded in the lyrics. The study examines how Rand Slam frames social issues such as racial discrimination, development inequality, state violence, and the struggles of Papuan society through his confrontational and symbolic lyrical style. The research uses a qualitative descriptive method with data collected through textual observation of lyrics, literature review, and analysis of related articles. The findings indicate that Rand Slam not only represents social realities but also constructs counter-narratives against dominant state discourse. His works express strong social criticism through local idioms, direct language, and symbolic expressions that highlight the marginalized voices of Papuan communities. As a comparison, this study also examines Navicula’s song “Refuse to Forget,” which represents social criticism from a different approach. While Rand Slam focuses on local Papuan experiences with a confrontational style, Navicula addresses human rights violations after the 1965 tragedy in a symbolic and universal way, using English lyrics to reach a wider audience. This comparison illustrates that social criticism in music can be represented through diverse strategies depending on the socio-cultural and political contexts. In conclusion, this research emphasizes that both hip hop and rock music serve as powerful mediums of social representation, where song lyrics function as spaces of meaning-making, resistance, and the construction of collective identity.
