Abstract

This study aims to identify the barriers to therapeutic communication between nurses and patients at the Islamic Hospital of Jakarta Pondok Kopi, specifically in the Annas 1 inpatient ward. Therapeutic communication is an essential element in nursing, aimed at building trust to support patient recovery. However, its effectiveness is often hindered by a lack of communication skills, cultural differences, patients' emotional conditions, time constraints, and an unsupportive hospital environment. This study employs a qualitative method with a field approach. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation involving nurses, patients, and the ward head. The findings of this study indicate that the barriers include internal factors of nurses (limited knowledge, workload), patient factors (emotions, communication difficulties), external factors (noise, facilities), and a lack of awareness and concern about the healing process. The study recommends regular training for nurses, better time management, and improved hospital facilities to create a more conducive atmosphere. These findings are expected to serve as a reference for hospitals to enhance services through more effective communication and strengthen the professionalism of nurses.
