Abstract

Film is a complex mass communication medium, combining visual, audio, and narrative elements to convey cultural messages, ideologies, and moral values to a wide audience. This study aims to analyze the representation of modern Javanese culture in the film Sekawan Limo using Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. The focus of the research is directed at visual signs, dialogues, and symbols of Javanese culture that appear in the film, including language, manners, Javanese script, Suro night rituals, amulets, and spiritual practices. The formulation of the problem raised in this study is how the representation of modern Javanese culture is displayed in the film Sekawan Limo. This research method uses a qualitative with a semiotic analysis approach, data collection techniques in the form of direct observation through repeated screenings of the film and literature studies to support the analysis. Data are analyzed using Roland Barthes' three levels of semiotic meaning, namely denotation, connotation, and myth, to reveal how the film constructs the image of Javanese culture in the context of modernity. The results show that the film Sekawan Limo not only functions as entertainment, but also becomes a cultural communication medium that maintains traditional Javanese values and adapts to modern social realities.
