Abstract

This study examines the construction of sadness in the film Jatuh Cinta Seperti Di Film-Film directed by Yandy Laurens using Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. This research is motivated by the film’s visual and narrative phenomena depicting the dynamics of sadness and the normalization of grief in adulthood. The focus of this study is on the character Hana and how she interprets sadness through verbal and non-verbal expressions. The objectives of this study are to identify the construction of sadness in Hana’s character, to analyze the denotative, connotative, and mythical meanings contained in visual and narrative signs using Roland Barthes' semiotics, and to relate Kübler-Ross’s stages of grief to the emotional construction in the film. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method with in-depth observation of sequences and scenes, using units of analysis that include scenes and dialogues illustrating both verbal and non-verbal symbols of sadness. The findings indicate that the construction of sadness in this film is represented through visual signs such as black-and-white color palettes, body gestures, eye gazes, and dialogues related to feelings of loss and denial. The denotative, connotative, and mythical meanings in this film serve as a medium for viewers to understand sadness as part of self-acceptance. This study is expected to contribute to the development of semiotic film analysis within the field of communication, assist in enhancing media literacy among viewers, and provide a new perspective on sadness as a universal emotional process.
