Abstract

This study analyzes the types of phonological deviations made by Laurence Benson, a native speaker of English, in pronouncing Indonesian words particularly those involving vowel and liquid sounds. The analysis draws on the theory of CrossLinguistic Influence (Odlin, 1990) to trace the influence of the first language on the second language at the phonological level. A descriptive-qualitative approach was employed, utilizing techniques such as observation, phonetic transcription, and interviews. The interpretation process was carried out after transcribing and classifying the data; each deviation was interpreted by examining its position within the word, the type of phonological change, and the possible mechanisms of negative transfer or compensatory strategies used by the subject. The findings reveal a total of 101 phonological deviations, including 34 involving the vowel sound /a/ and 26 involving the liquid sound /r/. The vowel deviations included centralization, sound substitution, diphthongization, and elision, while the liquid deviations comprised elision, substitution, and articulatory influence from the subject’s L1. The differences between the phonological systems of English and Indonesian, along with Benson’s linguistically dominant English-speaking environment, were identified as the primary contributing factors. These findings affirm that language transfer and usage context play a significant role in the acquisition of second-language phonology. Keywords: Phonological deviation, pronunciation, cross-linguistic influence, vowel sound, liquid sound.
