Abstract

This research examines the values of Transcendentalism in the movie Eat, Pray, Love (2010) and then relates it to the discourse of modernity. Transcendentalism is a philosophical, spiritual, and literary movement that emerged in 1830 in the United States. Deep appreciation of nature, belief in oneself and individual potential are important aspects of the Transcendentalism Movement. In this research I use Tiffany K. Wayne's theory of Transcendentalism, Anthony Giddens' theory of Modernity, and Stuart Hall’s theory of representation. This research uses representation analysis to map various perspectives on the concepts of Transcendentalism in the movie Eat, Pray, Love (2010). The results of this study indicate that the movie Eat, Pray, Love (2010) explains the ideas of Transcendentalism represented by modern woman character, Elizabeth Gilbert. The film shows its modernity discourse through its cross-country narrative settings usage.
