Abstract

Fashion is a form of nonverbal communication used by individuals to express their identity, especially among adolescents who are heavily influenced by South Korean cultural trends and Korean style. This study aims to examine how male fanboys use Korean-style fashion as a form of gender identity expression. Using a phenomenological approach and George Herbert Mead's theory of symbolic interactionism (mind, self, society), this research analyzes how fashion symbols are internalized, how they shape self-image, and how they are negotiated within social environments. The findings show that for fanboys, Korean-style fashion is not just a clothing trend, but a symbolic representation of their gender identity in a flexible way through social experiences in fandom communities and interactions with their surroundings. Support from the K-pop community provides a safe space for self-expression, even though challenges such as social stigma still exist. This study affirms that K-pop fashion can serve as a symbolic tool in shaping a more inclusive and dynamic gender identity.
