Abstract

This research is based on the growing trend of digital communication among Generation Z, particularly in the use of stickers on the WhatsApp platform. Generation Z is known for actively utilizing visual features to convey messages quickly and effectively, with stickers becoming a common tool to express emotions and reinforce meaning in everyday social interactions. The purpose of this study is to explore how Generation Z uses stickers as a form of nonverbal communication on WhatsApp, and how the meaning behind these stickers is interpreted in various contexts. This study applies a qualitative descriptive approach, with data collected through in-depth interviews and observations involving several Generation Z informants. The analysis is supported by theories of nonverbal signs from Charles Sanders Peirce, Ferdinand de Saussure, and Jude Burgoon, which help explain the symbolic meaning conveyed through visual expressions. The findings reveal that stickers are used to express feelings such as joy, anger, disappointment, and humor in spontaneous ways, while also strengthening digital social bonds. These visual symbols are often interpreted instantly without the need for lengthy explanations. In conclusion, stickers play a significant role in nonverbal communication, reflecting the expressive and practical communication style of Generation Z. This study recommends that future research examine sticker usage from the perspectives of cultural differences, relationship contexts, or gender-based interpretations in digital communication. Keywords: Generation Z, Nonverbal communication, Social Interaction, Symbolic meaning, WhatsApp stickers.
