Abstract

Language anxiety has become one of the challenges faced by students at the Islamic boarding school when giving speeches in English. This research aims to analyze the pronunciation of students at an Islamic boarding school who experience anxiety when giving speeches in public, focusing on phonological aspects such as Assimilation, Deletions, Lenitions, and Insertions. This research involves 6 students from the Public Speaking group; data were collected through interviews and phonological analysis of the students' pronunciation during speeches. This study analyzes anxiety using Szyszka's (2017) and Alpert and Haber's (1960) theories. Then, for the phonological analysis, Spencer's theory is used. (1996). The research results show that in the anxiety analysis, students experience debilitative anxiety and facilitative anxiety. Meanwhile, the phonological pronunciation analysis shows that students undergo several phonological processes: Assimilation, Deletions, Lenitions, and Insertions.
