Abstract

Communication in online games is crucial for interaction and collaboration between players, but it often evolves into psywar—aggressive communication, both verbal and non-verbal. This study identifies the forms of psywar in Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and how players interpret them, using symbolic interaction theory and a netnographic method. Observations and analysis show that verbal psywar appears through words like “noob,” “burden,” and “just surrender,” while non-verbal psywar is expressed through recall spam, emoticons, the use of exclusive skins, and specific hero actions. The meaning of psywar varies: some players see it as entertainment or motivation, while others experience it as psychological pressure. Based on symbolic interaction theory, psywar involves the interpretation of symbols (mind), identity construction (self), and community norms (society). Paid visual features also serve as tools for symbolic dominance, making psywar a form of strategic communication loaded with social, symbolic, and economic meaning. This research can be further developed by exploring psywar in other online games or examining its impact on players' mental health in more depth.
