Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation of the School Literacy Movement (GLS) based on Islamic Religious Education (PAI) in an effort to increase students' interest in reading and critical thinking skills at Assahaqiyah Junior High School. The background of this research is the low literacy culture among students and the importance of integrating religious values in the formation of character and critical thinking mindsets. This study uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. Data collection techniques are carried out through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The results of the study show that the implementation of PAI-based GLS in Assahaqiyah Junior High School is carried out through three main stages: habituation, development, and learning. At the habituation stage, schools integrate literacy activities with Islamic values, such as reading the Qur'an and the stories of the prophets. In the development stage, students are encouraged to write Islamic journals and read books with Islamic themes. Meanwhile, at the learning stage, PAI teachers direct students to analyze the values of Islamic teachings in the text and relate them to daily life. This implementation has proven to be effective in increasing students' interest in reading as well as their ability to think critically about religious and social issues. In conclusion, PAI-based GLS can be a relevant and meaningful strategy in building a religious and critical literacy culture among students.
