Abstract
Alternative energy is urgently needed to reduce dependence on non-renewable fossil fuels that have a negative impact on the environment. The purpose of this study was to determine how an electrochemical cell that uses a salt solution works, and to assess how the number of cells affects the voltage and electric current produced. In this system, magnesium is used as the anode and iron as the cathode, with the electrolyte being water mixed with common salt (NaCl) which when the salt is dissolved in water decomposes into 〖Na〗^+ and 〖Cl〗^- ions. Each cell consists of 450 ml of well water and 100 grams of table salt, as well as a pair of Mg and Fe electrodes. The study was conducted by connecting cells in series from 1 to 4 cells to observe how much difference in current and electric voltage was released. This technology has great potential to be used as a lighting tool for fishermen when fishing at night, as well as an alternative source of electricity in coastal and remote areas. The test results show that increasing the number of electrochemical cells increases the voltage and current produced. At 1 cell, a voltage of 0.90 V and a current of 0.15 A are produced. When increased to 2 cells, the voltage increases to 1.50 V and a current of 0.27 A. With the use of 3 cells, the voltage increases to 3.13 V and a current of 0.31 A. Finally, at 4 cells, the voltage reaches 3.6 V and a current of 0.35 A. All configurations successfully light up the LED, with the brightness level increasing as the electrical power increases.
