Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of spindle speed variations on the surface roughness of aluminum 6061 in the milling process. Aluminum 6061 was chosen due to its lightweight, corrosion-resistant properties, and widespread use in the automotive industry. Surface roughness is a critical factor affecting component performance, necessitating optimization of machining parameters. The research method involved experiments using a conventional milling machine with variations in spindle speed (1000 rpm, 1500 rpm, and 2000 rpm), a constant depth of cut (0.5 mm), and an HSS end mill tool with a 12 mm diameter. Surface roughness measurements were conducted using a Mitutoyo RJ210 surface roughness tester. The results indicated that higher spindle speeds resulted in rougher surfaces. The lowest average roughness (Ra) was achieved at 1500 rpm (0.434 µm), while the highest occurred at 2000 rpm (0.464 µm). The study concludes that spindle speed significantly affects the surface roughness of aluminum 6061, with 1500 rpm yielding the best results. This research recommends optimizing machining parameters to achieve desired surface quality for industrial applications. Future studies should explore carbide tools, feed rate variations, and CNC machining for deeper analysis. Keywords: Aluminum 6061, milling, surface roughness, spindle speed, Ra.
