Abstract

This research was motivated by the low level of students' conceptual understanding of the topic of the states of matter and changes in the states of matter. This was evident from the students' lack of ability to interpret the concepts of solids, liquids, and gases; to provide examples of liquids and gases; to classify solids, liquids, and gases based on their changes; to compare the changes in states of matter; to summarize key points of the topic; to conclude the factors that influence changes in the states of matter; and to explain the definitions of states of matter and their changes. The aim of this study is to improve students’ conceptual understanding in the IPAS subject by using the Prediction, Observation, Explanation (POE) model in Grade IV students at SDN Wanasari 02. This research used Classroom Action Research (CAR) method and was conducted in two cycles. Each cycle consisted of four stages: planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. The subjects of this research were 29 fourth-grade students. The instrument used was an evaluation test that included seven indicators of conceptual understanding: comparing, explaining, summarizing, concluding, exemplifying, classifying, and interpreting. The research was considered successful if it reached 80% classical completeness and a minimum score of 75. The results showed an improvement in students' conceptual understanding from Cycle I to Cycle II. In Cycle I, the percentage of classical completeness was 51.6%, with an average score of 73.6. After conducting improvements in Cycle II, classical completeness increased by 38% to 89.5%, with an average score of 81.4. Thus, the POE model can be recommended as an effective alternative in the learning process to improve students’ conceptual understanding.
