Abstract
Currently, the development of modern technology is progressing rapidly. This necessitates advancements in finding alternative materials to replace those that are hard to obtain with more accessible and eco-friendly options. One of the natural fibers being studied is pineapple leaf fiber. Pineapple fiber is chosen for its numerous advantages, including abundant availability, renewability, lightweight, low cost, biodegradability, recyclability, non-toxicity, and environmental friendliness. This research aims to investigate the effect of structural composite laminates made from pineapple leaf fiber on impact strength and microstructure. The composite uses BQTN 157 polyester matrix with a hand lay-up method, focusing on composites made from pineapple leaf fiber with a soaking time of 1 hour and 5% NaOH. The research variables include fiber orientations of 0º/45º, 45º/90º, and 0º/90º. The highest impact strength was found in the fiber orientation of 0º/90º, with an average impact strength of 5.466 (kJ/m²) and energy absorption of 0.2686 joules. Micrograph results of the fractured surface of the composite specimens after impact testing showed frequent occurrences of fiber pull-out, voids, and matrix-rich areas. Voids or air bubbles occurred due to the hand lay-up technique, trapping air within the composite board. Fiber pull-out happened because the fibers did not bond perfectly with the resin, causing them to protrude after impact testing.
