Abstract

Instagram allows its users to view, select and edit photo and video posts, including those of others. This study examines the relationship between social comparison and peer support with body shape dissatisfaction. Using a quantitative correlational method with a quota sampling technique involving 385 active Instagram user students at Universitas Islam 45 Bekasi. Using the scales, Body Dissatisfaction Scale male version (α = 0.820) and female version (α = 0.868), Physical Appearance Comparison Scale–Revised (α = 0.711), peer support scale (α = 0.889). The results of the study showed a significant positive relationship between social comparison and total body shape dissatisfaction (r) = 0.477; p < 0.000; in men (r) = 0.559; p < 0.000; in women (r) = 0.639; p < 0.000. There is a significant negative relationship between peer support and total body dissatisfaction (r) = -0.318; p < 0.000, in men (r) = -0.167; p < 0.021, in women (r) -0.261; p < 0.000. Then, social comparison can contribute 22.8% of total body dissatisfaction, 45.4% for women, and 29.5% for men. Then, peer support can contribute 8.4% of total body dissatisfaction, 4.7% for men, and 5.1% for women. Furthermore, there is a significant difference between women and men in the variables of body dissatisfaction and peer support. While social comparison, there is no significant difference.
