Abstract

Low carbon steel machining is often done in manufacturing processes, especially in the process of making engine components. The process of cutting low carbon steel (ST-37), generally use High Speed Steel (HSS) chisel for it has high enough violence, relatively cheap prices and tool geometries that can be formed. In machining, tool geometry influences the process of cutting material because this determines the quality of the product, such as the roughnessof the surface. The purpose of this study is to obtain surface roughness with variations in the chisel geometry and nose radius and to obtain the optimal surface roughness. This study used an experimental method using ST-37 steel and High Speed Steel chisel. The chisel geometry variation used is side rake angle of 12o, 15o and 18o, side cutting edge angle of 85o, 80o and 75o, and nose radius of 0 mm, 0,4 mm and 0,8 mm. Surface roughness measurement is using Surface Roughness Tester. Analysis of the effect of chisel geometry on surface roughness was carried out by the Taguchi method using L18 and Anova. The machining parameters used in this study were cutting depth of 1 mm and 2 mm, spindle rotation speed of 185 rpm, 425 rpm and 624 rpm, and feeding of 0.05 mm/rev, 0.075 mm/rev and 0.1 mm/rev. The results obtained from the Taguchi and Anova analyzes are parameters that have a significant effect where nose radius (R) with a contribution of 52.38 % and feeding (f) with a contribution of 24.70 %. The optimum surface roughness in this study was 0.512778 μm with cutting depth of (a) 1 mm, spindle rotation speed (n) 625 rpm, feeding (f) 0.05 mm/rev, nose radius (R) 0.8 mm, side rake angle (γ) 12o, and side cutting edge angle (Kr) 85o.
