Abstract
This research aims to examine the relationship between the novel Cinder by Marissa Meyer and the classic fairy tale Cendrillon by Charles Perrault in the depiction of female characters in the aspects of thought, action, and appearance. In analyzing the relationship between the novel Cinder and the fairy tale Cendrillon, I used Julia Kristeva's concept of intertextuality. Furthermore, I used the analysis method of the eight elements of intertextuality proposed by Kevin Paul Smith. The result of this research is the explicit use of references from Cendrillon's fairy tale into Cinder's novel through authorized and incorporation elements. Then there are modifications in the process of rewriting fairy tales into novels that can be connected in writerly elements in the aspect of persecuted female characters and the change of glass shoes to cyborg legs, allusion in the aspect of happily ever after quotes, story motifs, descriptions and character names. Through the re-vision element, there has been a transformation of the weak and passive female characters in the fairy tale into empowered, independent, and strong female characters. This research also resulted in the adaptation of old fairy tales into new fairy tales through the fabulation element in the aspects of character uniqueness, setting, and story conflict. In addition, the architextual/chronotopic element used in finding genre changes from a fairy tale into a young adult fiction and science fiction genre novel emerges from the aspects of magic objects and events.
