Abstract

The digital game Alan Wake tells the story of a novelist who has nightmares about the fame he gets and makes himself experience Writer's block and wants to take a short vacation to a small town called Bright Falls with his wife, but the small town contains a mystical side that will make Alan's nightmares come true. This thesis aims to analyze the depiction of archetypes in the storyline provided throughout the player's journey towards the character of Alan Wake and what he encounters through the archetype theories presented by Carl G. Jung. The findings show that the archetypes are related to mythological images reflected from the collective unconscious in Alan Wake. Such forms as Barbara Jagger, Thomas Zane, Taken, Alan as Hero, and Bird Leg Cabin are projected images that Alan creates in his dreams. Alan begins his nightmare journey, goes through all the archetypes that play a role in it, and realizes how to end the "Departure" Script as Alan's individuation process. In conclusion, Alan Wake's subconscious journey by ending at the point of self-realization and writing the script "Departure" can be considered as the process of individuation.
