Abstract

Electroplating is a coating group that relies on chemical solutions (electrolytes) in the transfer of metal ions to other metals with an electric current flowing. Electroplating is carried out in order to affect the characteristics, namely by providing the properties of coating thickness, hardness and surface structure to the workpiece which is expected to experience an influence in terms of surface structure and resistance to corrosion. The research using ASTM A36 steel material which will be carried out by the nickel electroplating process aims to determine the influence of high tension and temperature of the solution on the results of the thickness and hardness values of the steel. The voltage given using variations of 8, 10, and 12 volts as well as solution temperatures of 35oC and 50oC will then be tested for thickness with a dial gauge and hardness test with a Rockwell A (HRA) hardness gauge. The results showed that the highest thickness value occurred in a specimen with a voltage of 12 volts and in a solution temperature of 50oC with an average thickness value of 3.965 mm, and the lowest thickness value occurred at a voltage of 8 volts and in a solution temperature of 35oC with an average thickness value of 3.937 mm, the thickness value increased along with the increase in voltage and temperature of the solution. Meanwhile, the lowest hardness value occurred at a voltage of 8 volts and a solution temperature of 35oC with an average hardness value of 46.97 HRA and the highest surface hardness result occurred in a specimen with a voltage of 12 volts and a solution temperature of 50oC with an average hardness value of 49.30 HRA. From this data, the higher the voltage and temperature, the thickness and hardness will increase. Keywords : Nickel electroplating , ASTM A36, voltage, temperature, thickness and hardness.
