Abstract

This article described a study of the effect of a SMAW welding process with no preheating and varied preheating temperatures on the microstructure and hardness of SS400 steel. The research used experimental design methods. The variables in this study are the preheat temperatures which are 120 °C, 150 °C, and 180 °C. Parameters of welding electrode types, welding current, and the duration from preheating to the welding process are made for each preheat temperature variation. Variations in preheating temperature have different effects on the microstructure and Vickers hardness of SS400 steel. The results conclude that preheating temperature variations in the SMAW welding process affect the microstructure and the resulting Brinell hardness value. Specimens at temperature variations of 150 °C to 180 °C did not have a martensitic structure, while martensite occurs between ferrite and pearlite in the raw materials for the specimens at 120 °C preheat temperatures. The higher the preheat temperature, the less the amount of martensite. The hardness value is in line with the formed microstructure. There is an effect of non-preheat welding and variations in preheat temperature on the Vickers hardness value of the SS400 steel SMAW welding process. The preheat temperature variations affect a significantly decreased hardness value of SS400. Specimen with the lowest preheat has the highest hardness in the weld metal area, and the highest preheat has the lowest hardness in the base metal area. The average highest hardness value is in the weld metal area, while the lowest is in the base metal area.
