Abstract
Steel is one type of metal that is widely used by humans and industry for various purposes. Sometimes the steel to be used does not have a hardness level that is sufficient to meet the needs. The hardness level that is insufficient can be increased by a heat treatment process. By carrying out a heat treatment process, the hardness properties of the steel will be higher than the initial hardness. The hardness level that is insufficient can be increased by a heat treatment process. By carrying out a heat treatment process, the hardness properties of the steel will be higher than the initial hardness. In order for steel to be hardened, steel requires good hardness capability. Hardness capability is the ability of a material to be hardened. One material that requires high hardness and strength is S45C carbon steel, which is a type of "Medium Carbon Steel" steel that has a carbon content (0.3-0.5% C). With this medium carbon content, it is possible for this steel to have its mechanical properties further improved. This research is an experimental research using materials with a diameter of 16 mm and a length of 100 mm, with 3 variations of cooling media. The results of this study can be concluded that the post-quenching tempering process with variations in bromus cutting oil, mineral oil, and full synthetic oil cooling media produces a hardness of 190.8% HB in Raw Materials, after the post-quenching tempering heat treatment process, the average value of bromus cutting oil quenching is 240.6 HB. In mineral oil quenching, the average hardness value is 280.5 HB. In full synthetic oil quenching, the average hardness value is 238.9 HB. The hardness value of each specimen that has gone through the heat treatment process has increased significantly. The results of the Metallography (Microstructure) study using an optical microscope after the post-quenching tempering heat treatment process with bromus cutting oil, mineral oil and full synthetic oil cooling media, the microstructure obtained is ferrite and pearlite.
