Abstract

This research aims to determine the physical and mechanical properties of banana leaf fiber composite boards reinforced with polypropylene matrix with various variations in sintering times. The research was carried out by making composite boards using the sintering method by making three types of specimens with different sintering holding times, namely the first 25 minutes, 30 minutes and 35 minutes. The results of making composites were tested for physical properties in the form of density testing, water absorption and thickness expansion and mechanical properties testing using tensile tests. The results of the physical properties test show that the average density value for the 25 minute time variation is 0.817 g/cm3 and 35 minutes, namely 0.878 g/cm3, this value is included in the JIS A5908 - 2003 standard criteria but for the 30 minute time variation it exceeds the maximum JIS standard figure. A5908 – 2003, namely 0.919 g/cm3. The water absorption capacity and thickness development values of the three time variations are still below the maximum limit. Meanwhile, in mechanical properties testing, the highest tensile strength value was obtained in 30 minute specimens with an average tensile strength value of 8.21 Mpa. The results of this research show that variations in sintering time can affect the mechanical properties of composites, such as tensile strength and physical properties of the material.
