Abstract

AISI 1045 steel is a type of steel that is classified as a medium carbon alloy steel which is widely used as the main material in machines such as shafts, gears and piston connecting rods in motorized vehicles. Hardening treatment on AISI 1045 steel is needed to improve the mechanical properties of the material, namely strength, hardness and wear resistance. The hardening heat treatment carried out in this research was 8500C. The hardening process is a heat treatment process carried out to produce a hard workpiece. This process is carried out at a high temperature, namely at the austenization temperature which is used to dissolve cementite in austenite which is then quenched. The quenching process uses a cooling medium to increase the mechanical properties of the metal, namely hardness. This research uses a hardening heat treatment method by differentiating variations in cooling media. For variations in cooling media, 3 different types of coolant are used, namely salt water, oil and air. The tensile strength obtained based on research results with salt water was 135.05 Mpa, oil was 68.51 Mpa, air was 52.80 Mpa and without treatment it was 53.16 Mpa. From the results of this research, it can be seen that the salt water cooling media has the highest value. Keywords : Hardening, Tensile Test, Cooling Medium
