Abstract

This study analyzes the identity of Muslim families domiciled in urban areas with an upper middle class social level that is intertwined with modernization values but still prioritizes the values of Islamic teachings as a guideline for their lives. In the lifestyle they live, there are values of religious commodification and cultural commodification that require them to negotiate between the two. The purpose of this study is to provide an example of an analysis of the identity of an Urban Muslim family related to the concept of modernization. The approach used is the Identity theory by Stuart Hall and the modernization theory by Baudelaire. With the identity analysis method, data that can be taken from the research object are interviews and social media observations. The results of this study indicate that Urban Muslim families can balance the changing times by negotiating between modern life and religious life in their daily lives.
