Abstract

Welding of Austenite Stainless Steel or stainless steel of the Austenite type often experiences corrosion due to the formation of ferrite with a high percentage that triggers corrosion. In stainless steel welding, a backing gas is used to prevent dirt contamination from the surrounding environment from entering the weld metal and to balance the austenite-ferrite phase, thereby inhibiting the chrome carbide process. In the field work the use of backing gas uses Argon gas and is carried out only in the weld root area, while the oxidation process still occurs during the hot pass to capping welding process. This study aims to analyze the effect of variations of shielding and backing gas on the results of macro and micro structures in 316L austenitic stainless steel. In this study, welding using the GTAW method with austenitic stainless steel type 316L with a thickness of 4mm was carried out with a V connection type, by varying the flowrate on the shielding and backing gas Argon in each welding process. After the welding process, the Non-Destructive Penetrant Test was carried out to determine the physical results of welding using variations in flow rate on the shielding and backing Argon gas, metallographic testing with an optical microscope. The test results show that by varying the flow rate on the shielding and backing gas using Argon (AR) results in a CR nitriding coating process on the GTAW welded material. The addition of a flow rate to the backing gas provides a reducing agent that can protect or neutralize oxide growth more effectively in welding austenic stainless steels. And can improve the results of metallographic tests on these materials. So that it can be stated by varying the flowrate on shielding and backing Argon gas can be applied to GTAW welding.
