Abstract

In the writing process, it is often found that the sentence structures produced by EFL students are unique and do not conform to standard English grammar. This study examines the writing structures and factors that influence the English writing structures of EFL students in a tutoring center in Bekasi. By applying the English syntax theory from Kim & Sells and the Interlanguage theory from Ellis, this study uses a qualitative approach to analyze the writings of 8th-grade students on the theme "My Daily Activities." Data were collected through coordination with teachers and documentation of students' writings. The results of the study indicate that students tend to use sentences that follow the basic Subject-Predicate-Complement pattern. Additionally, the use of noun phrases (NP) as subjects followed by verb phrases (VP) and prepositional phrases (PP) is predominantly observed. However, there are several issues that need attention, such as incorrect verb usage, misspelled words, and vocabulary usage influenced by the first language. This indicates the presence of variable rules and the order of acquisition in selecting certain grammatical structures in the English writing of EFL students.
