Abstract

The process of heat treatment (heat treatment) on steel has existed since BC. This process aims to obtain various required mechanical properties by adjusting the parameters that occur during the heat treatment process. This study aims to determine the effect of oil viscosity on the hardness of SKD 11 steel material and impact toughness. The material used is from raw material and then shaped according to the dimensions according to the test standard, after it is formed, the material will be hardened at a temperature of 1000°C and then quenched using variations in oil viscosity, namely SAE 10W-10, SAE 10W-40 and SAE 10W-90. Furthermore, the material is tempered at a temperature of 220°C with air quenching. Hardness testing using the Brinell test tool and using the ASTM E10 standard, the load used is 3000 Kgf and the indenter diameter is 10 mm, and the impact test uses the charpy method and uses the ASTM E 23 standard. Based on the ASTM E 23 standard the test sample has dimensions T: 10 mm, W: 10 mm and W: 55 mm. The results of this study indicate that the optimum variation of oil viscosity to produce the best steel material properties is SAE 10W-10. At SAE 10W-10, the highest hardness value of SKD 11 steel material is 815.8 HB. Which is inversely proportional to the impact value. Keywords: Viscosity, SKD 11, Heat Treatment
