Abstract
The use and utilization of composite materials is currently growing, along with the increasing use of these materials, starting from simple household appliances to the industrial sector, both small scale and large scale industries. The aim of this research is to determine the value of mechanical properties of composites made from Polypropylene matrix reinforced with palm frond fiber, namely impact test and density test. This composite research carried out the orientation of the palm frond fiber arrangement with Polypropylene, the printing method used was hand lay up (Hand Raise) with three pressing time variables KWP 1 (30 Minutes), KWP 2 (45 Minutes), and KWP 3 (60 Minutes) . For each pressing time variable there are 10 specimens. Next, there is a density test to measure the mass weight of the specimen at each pressing time. After conducting research, the impact strength values for KWP 1: 3,455 kJ/mm², KWP 2: 3,424 kJ/mm², and KWP 3: 3,401 kJ/mm² were obtained. It was found that the longer the pressing time, the more easily the fibers would break or be damaged, and the longer the pressing time, the lower the impact value obtained would be. The longer the pressing time, the more easily the specimen will break. Because the fiber will experience degradation or become brittle easily. Meanwhile, the faster the pressing time, the stronger the fiber texture will be and will not break easily. So the best value obtained for KWP 1 (30 Minutes) is 3,455 kJ/mm². Next, a density test was carried out to measure the mass weight of the specimen with values of KWP 1: 0.121 g/cm³, KWP 2: 0.143 g/cm³, and KWP 3: 0.145 g/cm³. The composite pressing time obtained did not have a significant effect on the density test value.
