Abstract

The village of Bayah, located in the Lebak Regency of Banten, is near the coast of Bayah Beach. Consequently, many of the villagers utilise beach sand as a concrete mix due to the difficulty in obtaining river sand. Theoretically, beach sand is considered to be of poor quality because it contains a high amount of salt. This salt absorbs moisture from the air, causing an increase in the volume of concrete. Therefore, it is necessary to clean the sand of its salt content before use. When applied in construction, the resulting quality of the building is generally poor and thus requires evaluation. This study evaluates the structural strength feasibility of residential buildings using beach sand from the coast of Bayah, Lebak, Banten. The evaluation employs a concrete strength test using a Hammer Test device and is analysed with Etabs V.19, SpColumn V.10, AutoCAD V.15, and Microsoft Excel V.19 applications, following the applicable Indonesian National Standards (SNI). The results of this study show that for a beam of 150x200 mm, the moment capacity (Mn) is 4.95 and the shear capacity (Vn) is 28.49, which are both greater than the moment demand (Mu) of 2.95 and shear demand (Vu) of 4.69. Additionally, for a column of 150x150 mm, the shear capacity (Vn) is 20.81, which is greater than the shear demand (Vu) of 5.93. The existing beam reinforcement, both for bending and shear, can still withstand the design forces. However, for the existing column capacity, it can only resist axial and gravitational forces. When subjected to lateral loads, the column capacity is less than the design forces, resulting in column failure. The existing shear reinforcement can still withstand the ultimate shear forces from both envelope 1 and envelope 2.
