Abstract
The raw material for knife blades is generally made from SK-5 steel. As a guide, SK-5 steel has a hardness of around 65 HRC and produces a mixture of carbon-rich martensite with some carbide solution. In this research, a heat treatment hardening process will be carried out using a variety of air, oil and salt water cooling media on AISI 1045 steel and continued by analyzing the hardness and microstructure values. The data from this research are then compared with the mechanical properties and microstructure of SK-5 steel so that the hardened AISI 1045 steel can be used as raw material for grass cutting blades. The aim of varying the cooling media is to determine the level of Rockwell hardness value and microstructure in AISI 1045 steel. The results of the research from Rockwell hardness testing showed that the average hardness value for the Raw Material was 27.4 HRC, after the heat treatment hardening process the average hardness value was carried out. The average for air quenching is 30.79 HRC, the percentage increase in hardness in specimens that are air quenched and raw material is 12.3% or the difference in hardness value is 3.39 HRC. In oil quenching the average hardness value was 58.83 HRC, the percentage increase in hardness in the oil quenched specimen with raw material was 114.70% or the difference in hardness value was 31.43 HRC. In salt water quenching, the average hardness value was 61.59 HRC, the percentage increase in hardness of the specimens quenched in salt water with raw material was 124.78% or the difference in hardness value was 34.19 HRC. The hardness value of each specimen that has gone through the heat treatment process has increased quite significantly. The results of the research from microstructure testing using an optical microscope after hardening with salt water, air and oil cooling media, it was found that the microstructure of the air quenching was ferrite and perlite while the oil and salt water quenching were martensite.
