Abstract

The development of manufacturing technology has displaced manual machining processes with automated machining, especially in large-scale industries that emphasize production speed and precision. Milling machines, particularly in the end milling process, were the main focus of this research. Machining process parameters such as spindle rotation speed, cutting speed, cutting depth, feeding speed, gear feeding motion, and cutting time play a key role in producing quality products. This study aims to determine the influence of variation in feed speed and depth of feeding in universal milling machines on vibration and surface roughness of SS400 steel. The method used by the experiment and using variations in feeding rates of 42 mm/min, 74 mm/min and 98 mm/min obtained significantly different surface roughness values. The smallest surface roughness value is 1,081 μm at a feeding speed of 42 mm/min, while the largest surface roughness value is 2,002 μm at a feeding speed of 98 mm/min. The results of the study showed that at a depth of cut of 0.5 mm, 1 mm and 1.5 mm obtained significantly different surface roughness values. The smallest surface roughness value is 1.081 μm at a depth of cut of 0.5 mm, while the greatest surface roughness value is 2.002 μm at a depth of feed (dept of cut) of 1.5 mm.
