Abstract

In the era of globalization, the use of metal plays a very important role in the development of technology and industry today, especially in the automotive industry. Corrosion is damage or reduction in a material caused by chemical reactions with its environment. Various efforts have been made to control material damage caused by corrosion. Corrosion detection methods can be carried out using weight loss, surface study or the Salt Spray Test (SST), each of which has advantages and disadvantages. Corrosion studies were carried out to determine the working mechanism of the Salt Spray Test machine and its corrosion resistance. And the results turned out that corrosion on S 45 C Steel occurred during the first 4 hours of observation, both on the raw material and on all specimens resulting from the nitriding process at temperatures of 350 oC, 420 oC, and 500 oC. The higher the nitriding temperature, the greater the percentage of corrosion, whereas corrosion on ASTM B 819 TYPE L copper has occurred in the first 8 hours on welded specimens using borax, but at a duration of 15 hours, successive percentages of corrosion can be seen on both the raw material and the welding results. with borax, while for non-borac specimens corrosion was only visible after 63 hours while the results of corrosion observations were for the first 4 hours, 8 hours and up to 73 hours on 316 L Stainless Steel as a result of GTAW welding with variations in flow rate of 8 lt/min, 15 lt/ min, and 25 lt/min. It does not show that any corrosion appears, this indicates that a long duration of time is required. The observation duration in the first 4 hours of the Salt Spray Test process shows that there is corrosion only on S45C Steel, only after 8 hours does it appear on the ASTM B 819 L Copper material, while on the material Stainless Steel 316 L up to 73 hours of observation has not seen any percentage of rust.
