Abstract

ABSTRACT A lathe is a machine tool that is used to cut turned objects. The lathe itself is the process of taking a workpiece and then applying it to a chisel which is moved translationally parallel to the rotational axis of the workpiece. The main problems that often arise and can affect the quality of turning results include changes in hardness. During the machining process, the tool interacts with the workpiece. Determining turning parameters is very important to obtain turning results and the cooling media is also very important to prevent wear and to change the hardness of the tool and the material being turned. The cooling media in this research include water, dromus cutting oil and tapmatic oil. The aim of this research is to determine the difference in hardness in the initial conditions and after using HSS lathe chisels with water cooling media, dromus cutting oil, and tapmatic oil at a cutting speed of 30 m/min or 400 rpm and 40 m/min or 550 rpm with a speed feed 0.055 mm/rev for rpm 400 and feed speed 0.06 mm/rev for rpm 550 with a cutting depth of 2.50 mm. This research uses a. Brinell hardness tester to measure the hardness of a material using varying speeds of 30 m/min and 40m/min and cooling media ( water, dromus cutting oil, tapmatic oil). The results showed that there was a significant difference in hardness values between the two speeds. The results showed that the air cooler had a significant difference in hardness values compared to the initial conditions before use, while the bromus cutting oil cooler did not have a significant difference in hardness values.
