Abstract

Palm fiber waste is increasing along with the development of the palm oil industry, but the waste is not used optimally and only thrown away and get burned. One of the efforts that can be done is to optimize waste palm fiber into materials for making composite boards. This purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of hot press temperature variations on the toughness properties of polypropene (pp) composites with a size difference of 2-5 mm reinforced with midrib fiber of palm with a temperature difference of 190oC, 200oC, 210oC and 225oC with a composition comparison between midrib fiber of palm with matrix of 25:75. The method in the manufacture of composite boards by hot press is to use the raw material of palm fronds taken from the fiber and polypropylene (pp) plastic in the form of ore with a size of 1-2 mm. The midrib fiber of palm are processed through a scouring and bleaching process which aims to increase its strength. After the boards are produced and conditioning is carried out, then the quality assurance boards are carried out by physical testing with density tests and mechanically with impact tests and continued with data analysis. The results showed that at a temperature of 225oC are the best results were obtained, namely the density value of 0.854 g/cm3 and the impact strength value of 14 Joules.
