Abstract

English has pronunciation characteristics that Indonesian does not have. Some students in Indonesia produce variations in pronouncing several English consonants because these consonant sounds are not owned by Indonesian consonants. An example is the voiced /ð/ and voiceless /θ/ interdental fricative consonants. This study focuses on analyzing the variations of sounds pronounced by English literature students at Unisma Bekasi class of 2021 in interpreting voiced /ð/ and voiceless /θ/ interdental fricatives by using the Praat application to find out their pronunciation and spectrogram analysis. The method used in this study is a mixed method, which is a combination of qualitative research and quantitative research. There were ten participants and they gave eighteen words and their sentences containing the sounds /θ/ and /ð/ in the initial, middle and final word positions. The data is in the form of audio recordings. The results of this study found that some students changed the voiced fricative interdental sound /ð/ into consonant sounds such as /d/ and /t/. This variation also occurs when they produce voiceless fricative interdental sounds. They change the sound /θ/ into consonant sounds namely /d/ and /t/.
