Abstract

This study aims to determine (1) the strategy used in translating Indonesian ethnic food into English; (2) assess the equivalence of the translation results; and (3) know the ideology used by translators in translating Indonesian ethnic food texts. This study uses a qualitative descriptive research method with an emphasis on cultural analysis. The data in this study refers to the website of Penerjemah Tersumpah Indonesia (https://penerjemah-id.com/2017/11/12/makanan-indonesia-dalam-bahasa-inggris/). The theory used in this research is Peter Newmark's translation strategy theory. From the 50 data points, it was found that seven translation strategies were used in the classification: Descriptive Equivalence Strategy, Literal Translation, Expansion Strategy, Functional Equivalence Strategy, Cultural Equivalence Strategy, Couplet Strategy, and Triplet Strategy.
