Abstract
Steel is one type of material that is widely used in the industrial, construction and automotive fields. As one of the supporting materials, its role is very large, but this steel has a weakness, which is susceptible to corrosion. Corrosion is a destructive process that occurs in steel. Corrosion in steel is unavoidable but the corrosion rate process can be slowed down by controlling the corrosion rate (Femiana Gapsari, 2017: 4). One way to inhibit the corrosion rate is by giving inhibitors. Beets contain xanthone compounds that can function as corrosion inhibitors. Beetroot extract is used as an organic inhibitor to reduce the corrosion rate of steel in seawater environment. Research has been conducted with a variation of immersion time of 5 days, 10 days, 15 days, and 20 days by giving a variation of inhibitor 5 ml, 10 ml, 15 ml, 20 ml and without inhibitor. From the results obtained, the highest corrosion rate was found in the sample that was not given an inhibitor, namely 6.874 mpy at 5 days of immersion. While the lowest corrosion rate is found in the sample given 20 ml inhibitor which is 1.718 mpy at 20 days. In the sample given 20 ml inhibitor, the inhibitor efficiency value is greater than the others.
