Abstract

Gender differences can affect the use of language and divide it into male language and female language. This study aims to analyze female and male language features and social contexts that cause differences in language use in a fictional story, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire novel using Coates' (2016) theory of language features and Holmes' (2013) theory of language and social context. An explanatory sequential mixed methods design was used through two stages to collect and analyze data; quantitative and qualitative. The results showed that the dominant female language feature used by female characters is hedges. However, male language features commands & directives and swearing & taboo language were also found in female utterances. On the other hand, male language features commands and directives are the most used language features in male utterances, but female language features hedges, tag questions and questions were also found. Different language use can also be explained through its social context by looking at the context of social distance, status, formality and functionality.
