Abstract

This research was conducted to see how the representation of family communication in the film Underage. The Underage film is one of Emil Heradi's films which was shown on Disney+ Hotstar on November 13, 2020. Film is a medium for conveying meaningful messages, and is arranged in every scene. Theauthor uses a descriptive analysis method with the Roland Barthes semiotic model approach which consists of Denotation, Connotation, and Myth. The object of research is the Underage film and the unit of analysis is in the form of a scene cutout in the film which contains elements of openness, empathy, support, positive feelings, and similarity, which displays an overview of the representation of family communication both visual, verbal and nonverbal in the Underage film. Based on the results of the study, the Underage film includes all elements of the Liliweri family's communication in the form of openness, empathy, positive feelings, support, and similarities both visual, verbal and non-verbal with the most dominant element being empathy in scenes 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6, namely the ability of each family member to put themselves in other people's positions, recognize other people's behavior, care, and pay attention to other people, and the least element is the similarity found in scene 6, namely every family expects the same a goal to produce a successful goal in accordance with everyone's expectations. Underage films are able to introduce good forms of family communication in families between parents and children in their teens.
