Abstract

The piston is an important part in a motorcycle and is the main mover of the engine where the piston moves up and down in the cylinder and makes steps such as suction stroke, compression stroke, combustion stroke, and exhaust stroke. These components are designed to be lightweight and resistant to pressure. Because of the large number of pistons on the market, research was conducted by comparing piston x with piston y. The methodology used in this study is to observe the characteristics of both types of pistons by means of microstructure testing, hardness tests and composition tests, from the results of material testing that FIM pistons have a higher hardness level with an average value of 132.2 HV than NPP pistons which have a lower hardness level than FIM pistons with an average value of 123.8 HV. From the results of testing the chemical composition of the NPP Piston content with Al-Si levels: Al 83.7, Si 11.8, Mn 0.092, Cu 1.16. FIM piston with Al-Si content: Al 84.0, Si 12.8, Mn 0.358, Cu 1.29. FIM pistons have higher hardness than NPP pistons, this is because the addition of alloying elements of Silicon (Si), Manganese (Mn) and Copper (Cu) to FIM pistons is higher.
