Abstract

Along with the development of the times, the role of materials madeof metal has begun to be replaced by non-mettalic materials, one of witch composites. A composite is a materials formedfrom a combination of two or more materials that have stronger mechanical properties than the forming materials. Composites consist of two part, namely matrices a binders or composite protectors and fibers as composit fillers. One of the natural fibers that is the object of this study is pineapple leaf fiber. Pineapple fiber is used because it has several advantages, namely abudantquantity, renewable, light density, low price, biodegradable in nature, recyclable, not harmful to health, and enviromentally friendy. The research began by making three types of specimens with differences in volume fractions, namely 5% fiber and 95% matrix, 10% fiber and 90% matrix and 15% fiber and 85% matrix with the hand lay-up manufacturing method. The result of making composite are carried out physical properties testing in the form of density testing, water absorption and development and mechanical testing with impact toughness test. The result of physical properties testing show that the average density value of each variation in volume fractions is above the JIS A5908-2003 standard. The water absorption and thick development values of the three fraction variations are still below the maximum limit. While in the mechanical properties test, the highest absorption energy value was obtained at a volume of 15% fiber and 85% matrix with an average absorption energy value of 0.3756 joules and an impact strength value of 8.339 kj/m2 keywords : Fiber Composite, Pineapple Leaf Fiber, Impact Strength, SNI Helmet, Physical Properties
