Abstract

This research was conducted to determine the characteristics and influence of the fiber composition of the coconut husk composite material (KSK) which is reinforced with polyester resin as an alternative material for making vehicle bodies. The research began by making three types of specimens with differences in volume fractions, namely the composition of KSK 1: 10% fiber and 90% matrix, the composition of KSK 2: 15% fiber and 85% matrix as well as the composition of KSK 3: 20% fiber and 80% matrix with the method of making hand lay - up. The results of making composites are carried out physical properties testing in the form of density testing, water absorption and thickness development as well as mechanical properties testing with impact toughness tests. The results of physical properties testing show that the average density value of each fiber composition is above the maximum allowable density standard of JIS A5908 - 2003, which is 1,168 g/cm3, 1,176 g/cm3 and 1,188 g/cm3. The water absorption and thick development values of the three composition have met the standard of JIS A5908 - 2003. Meanwhile, in the impact toughness test, the highest absorption energy value was obtained in the composition of KSK 3 with an average absorption energy value of 0.0791 Joules and an impact toughness value of 1.843 kJ/m2. The impact toughness of the vehicle body components that is closest to the motor drill with an impact toughness value of which is 6 kJ/m2.
